Hyderabad Toofans Outclass Soorma Club 3-1 to Storm into Final
The Hyderabad Toofans delivered their strongest performance of the season, outclassing JSW Soorma Hockey Club 3-1 to storm into the final of the Hockey India League (HIL) 2024-25 at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium. They will now face the Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers in the title clash on Saturday.
A Dominant Performance by Hyderabad Toofans
In a high-stakes semi-final, the Toofans set the tone early, opening the scoring in the 25th minute through Amandeep Lakra. They doubled their lead in the 35th minute when Jacob Anderson found the net, and Nilakanta Sharma added a third in the 43rd minute. The Soorma Hockey Club managed a late consolation goal through Jeremy Hayward in the 60th minute.
The Toofans created multiple opportunities from the outset. In the 8th minute, Talwinder Singh won a penalty corner, but a missed connection with Gonzalo Peillat’s variation denied them an early goal. Soon after, Mukul Sharma and Tim Brand combined to test Soorma’s goalkeeper, Vincent Vanasch, whose sharp positioning kept the ball out.
Soorma Club responded with their own attacking play, winning a penalty corner in the final seconds of the first quarter. Their captain, Harmanpreet Singh, unleashed a powerful drag-flick, but Toofans' goalkeeper Bikramjit Singh made an outstanding block to keep the score level.
Breakthrough and Tactical Brilliance
The deadlock was finally broken in the 25th minute when Amandeep Lakra capitalized on a penalty corner opportunity. His ferocious strike beat Vanasch and found the net, giving the Toofans the advantage at halftime.
Hyderabad continued their dominance in the third quarter, with Sumit weaving past defenders in the 32nd minute to set up Rajinder Singh, whose shot went narrowly wide. Their persistence paid off in the 35th minute when Arthur De Sloover intercepted an aerial pass and orchestrated a brilliant play that ended with Jacob Anderson sliding in at the far post to make it 2-0.
Despite Soorma Hockey Club's aggressive push for a comeback, Hyderabad’s disciplined defense stood firm. Taking advantage of a distracted Soorma defense, the Toofans launched a swift counter-attack, leading to Nilakanta Sharma’s 43rd-minute strike, making it 3-0.

Heroic Defense and a Consolation Goal
Bikramjit Singh’s goalkeeping heroics continued, with crucial saves in the 49th and 56th minutes to deny Soorma Club any chance of revival. Though Soorma secured multiple penalty corners towards the end, they struggled to convert. Jeremy Hayward finally scored in the last minute, but it was too late to change the outcome.
The Final Showdown
With this emphatic 3-1 victory, the Hyderabad Toofans have secured a place in the final against the Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers. Meanwhile, the JSW Soorma Hockey Club will face the Tamil Nadu Dragons in the third-place playoff match.
