India Open 2025: PV Sindhu Falls to Gregoria Tunjung in a Gripping Quarterfinal

India’s badminton sensation and two-time Olympic medalist, P.V. Sindhu, faced a hard-fought defeat against Indonesia’s Paris Olympics bronze medalist Gregoria Mariska Tunjung in the quarterfinals of the India Open 2025. The match, held in Delhi as part of the BWF Super 750 event, ended with scores of 9-21, 21-19, 17-21, reflecting a thrilling three-game battle.

Leading up to this encounter, Sindhu and Tunjung had a history of intense matches. Notably, in June 2023, during the Indonesia Open, Sindhu managed to overturn previous losses by defeating Tunjung in straight games, 21-19, 21-15. This victory was particularly significant as Tunjung had bested Sindhu in their prior meetings at the Spain Masters and the Malaysia Masters semifinals.

Sindhu, who recently returned to competitive badminton after her marriage to Venkata Datta Sai in December 2024, showcased resilience despite the challenging circumstances. After a slow start in the first game, which Tunjung dominated with a commanding 21-9 score, Sindhu bounced back in the second. She overturned a 3-9 deficit to level the game at 9-9 before securing the set 21-19, forcing a decider.

The final game saw both players locked in an intense contest. Sindhu fought valiantly, but Tunjung's consistency and ability to capitalize on critical moments sealed her victory at 21-17. With this win, Tunjung advanced to the semifinals, further solidifying her reputation as a formidable player on the international circuit.

Sindhu’s campaign at the India Open started on a strong note, with a convincing 21-15, 21-13 win over Japan’s Manami Suizu in the earlier rounds. Her performance in the tournament, however, highlights both her fighting spirit and the areas requiring improvement as she aims to regain her top form post-marriage.

As Sindhu looks ahead to upcoming tournaments, fans are optimistic about her resilience and ability to adapt. Matches like these not only underscore the depth of competition in women’s badminton but also reinforce Sindhu's status as a true competitor, always striving for excellence.
