Khelo India Winter Games 2025: A Celebration of Sports, Culture, and Talent

The much-anticipated Khelo India Winter Games (KIWG) 2025 are here, bringing together 428 athletes from 19 teams to compete in an adrenaline-filled celebration of winter sports. Set in the scenic landscapes of Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir, this fifth edition promises thrilling competition while highlighting the region’s unique culture and heritage. With a mission to foster talent, promote tourism, and unite the nation through sports, the games are a cornerstone of the Khelo India initiative.

Two-Phased Event Across Stunning Venues

The KIWG 2025 is divided into two exciting phases. The first phase will be held in Leh, Ladakh, from January 23-27, 2025, featuring ice events such as ice hockey and ice skating. The second phase, dedicated to snow games like skiing, will take place in Jammu & Kashmir from February 22-25, 2025.

The opening ceremony at the Nawang Dorjay Stobdan Sports Complex in Leh is set to be a grand spectacle, blending traditional Ladakhi culture with modern sportsmanship. Union Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, along with Ladakh’s Lieutenant Governor Brigadier Dr. BD Mishra officially inaugurate the games.

Participating Teams and Events

This year, 19 teams representing states, Union Territories, and institutions are set to compete. Himachal Pradesh, with a strong contingent of 78 athletes, leads the participant count, followed by Haryana, Ladakh, and Maharashtra. Uttarakhand, with a single athlete, showcases the diversity in representation.

The events include:

  • Ice Hockey: Matches will take place at the NDS Complex and Ladakh Scouts Regimental Centre.
  • Ice Skating: Both short and long-form skating events will be held at the NDS Complex and Gupuks Pond.

These games are a testament to India’s growing capabilities in hosting international-standard winter sports, with technical oversight from the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and national sports federations.

Historical Achievements and Expectations

In KIWG 2024, Maharashtra dominated the medal tally with 20 medals, including six golds in skating. Karnataka also clinched six golds but fell short in total medal count, finishing second. Ladakh created history by winning two golds in speed skating and securing third place overall with 13 medals.

This year, intense competition is expected in ice hockey, particularly between Army, ITBP, and the host team, Ladakh. Army and ITBP, as defending men’s and women’s champions, respectively, aim to retain their titles.

Beyond Sports: Showcasing Ladakh’s Heritage

The KIWG is more than a sports event; it’s a platform to showcase Ladakh’s rich art, culture, and hospitality. The opening ceremony reflects this ethos, welcoming 594 participants with Ladakhi traditions. The event also promotes tourism, drawing attention to Ladakh’s breathtaking landscapes, vibrant heritage, and potential as a winter sports destination.
