Khelo India Winter Games 2025: Ladakh Reigns Supreme

The Khelo India Winter Games 2025 showcased the perfect amalgamation of skill, endurance, and determination, with Ladakh emerging as the undisputed champions in the event's first phase. Hosted at the NDS Stadium in Ladakh, the Games concluded with much fanfare, offering a glimpse into the growing prominence of winter sports in India. With Ladakh claiming the top spot and the Indian Army retaining their ice hockey title, this year’s edition truly celebrated athletic excellence amidst the breathtaking Himalayan landscape.

Ladakh's Stellar Performance at KIWG 2025

In only their second year as hosts, Ladakh dominated the medal tally, finishing first with an impressive seven medals, including four golds. The standout moment for the region came in the mixed relay event, where the team of Stanzin Jampal, Skarma Tsultim, Mohammed Saquaf Raza, and Padma Angmo clinched gold with a time of 3:02.19. Maharashtra and Telangana trailed behind, taking silver and bronze, respectively.

The women's ice hockey team from Ladakh brought further glory by delivering a stellar performance. In a thrilling turnaround, they avenged their previous year’s loss to ITBP with a commanding 4-0 victory. This victory also marked a significant milestone for women's sports in Ladakh, a region where ice hockey is rapidly gaining traction.

Padma Chorol, a senior player in the women’s team, expressed her excitement:
"It feels amazing and it's a big moment for our team. Last year, we lost to ITBP, but this year, we made a strong comeback. A huge thanks to our coach and the Khelo India administration for bringing this event to Ladakh and making this possible for us."

Army Retains Ice Hockey Crown Amid Stiff Competition

The highlight of the Games was undoubtedly the men's ice hockey final, where the Indian Army edged out ITBP 2-1 in a nail-biting encounter. The Army's win was particularly sweet, considering they had lost to ITBP in a league match earlier in the tournament. Backed by the energetic support of fans from the Ladakh Scouts Regimental Centre, the Army team showcased resilience and tactical prowess.

The final was a high-octane clash, with all three goals scored in the last 15 minutes of the game. Rigzin Norboo gave the Army an early lead in the final period, only for ITBP to equalize through an unmarked Rigzin Norboo on an assist from Tashi Namgail. The Army's decisive moment came in the last minute when Padma Norboo netted the winning goal, assisted by Dorjay Angchok.

Army coach Rinchen Tundup commended both teams for their efforts:
"Our team has been playing matches back-to-back, starting with the CEC Cup, then the LG Cup, and now Khelo India. We didn't get much time to practice, but I'm glad the team performed well. We won all three Cups, and I'm happy with their performance. I also want to thank the ITBP team for giving us tough competition in today's final."

Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra Shine in Skating Events

Tamil Nadu emerged as a rising force in skating, capturing three gold medals, including a standout performance by Yashashree in the women’s 500m long track event. Her winning time of 58 seconds was a testament to Tamil Nadu's growing investment in winter sports. Riya Vilas Gayakwad of Maharashtra and Srija S. Rao of Karnataka completed the podium in a fiercely contested race.

Despite falling short of the top spot in the overall medal tally, Maharashtra remained a dominant force with 10 medals, albeit only two golds. The state had previously topped the KIWG 2024 medal chart, largely owing to their success in skating events.

The Road Ahead: Phase Two in Gulmarg

The excitement surrounding the Khelo India Winter Games 2025 is far from over. The second phase of the event is scheduled to take place in Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir, from February 22-25.
