Manchester United Secure Last-16 Spot with 2-0 Win Over FCSB
Manchester United sealed their place in the UEFA Europa League last 16 with a composed 2-0 victory over FCSB at the National Arena in Bucharest. Two second-half goals from Diogo Dalot and Kobbie Mainoo ensured that Ruben Amorim’s men finished third in the table, earning a direct passage into March’s knockout rounds while skipping February’s play-offs.
First Half - United Dominate Possession but Lack Cutting Edge
The Red Devils, starting the game in fourth place, showcased their control in the opening minutes, enjoying 68% possession within the first 10 minutes. However, despite their dominance, it was the Romanian hosts who produced the first major chance. A well-placed free kick by Risto Radunovic found Mihai Popescu, who stretched but narrowly missed the target.
This wake-up call spurred United into action. Young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo came close to opening the scoring, executing a clever flick before seeing his volley blocked by Popescu. Moments later, Christian Eriksen unleashed a powerful left-footed strike, only to be denied by FCSB goalkeeper Stefan Tarnovanu.
United continued to probe for an opening, with Mainoo and Eriksen finding spaces behind striker Rasmus Hojlund. Mainoo missed a golden opportunity in the 19th minute, failing to keep his shot down after a smart cutback from Hojlund. The Danish forward also had a chance of his own, connecting with a Lisandro Martinez pass, but his header lacked the power to beat Tarnovanu.
Despite dominating the play, United failed to break through a resilient FCSB defense, as the first half ended goalless.
Second Half - Goals from Dalot and Mainoo Seal the Win
With both teams still in qualifying positions, United started the second half with renewed attacking intent. Substitute Alejandro Garnacho, brought on for Tyrell Malacia, nearly made an instant impact, capitalizing on a defensive lapse only to see his effort strike the post.
Bruno Fernandes also came close, rattling the crossbar with a fierce 25-yard drive. United’s persistence, however, paid off on the hour mark. A well-worked throw-in routine saw Eriksen thread a pass into Mainoo, who delivered an inviting cross for Diogo Dalot to finish into an empty net.
FCSB nearly responded immediately when Daniel Birligea’s long-range shot clipped the bar. But United put the game beyond doubt in the 68th minute. Garnacho cut the ball back to Mainoo, who calmly slotted home to secure the victory.
FCSB pushed for a late goal, with Alexandru Baluta testing Altay Bayindir, but United’s defense remained firm. Fernandes and Casemiro both had late chances to add a third, but the final whistle confirmed United’s comfortable progression.
