Vijay Kumar Equals National Record, 2 Golds For Chhattisgarh in Weightlifting
Chhattisgarh's star weightlifter, Vijay Kumar, clinched the gold medal in the men's 55kg category at the 38th National Games with a record-equalling clean and jerk effort. His spectacular performance not only secured him the top podium spot but also brought him into the national limelight.
Vijay Kumar’s Stellar Performance
Vijay Kumar showcased his immense strength and determination, lifting a total of 248kg, which included a 105kg snatch and an impressive 143kg clean and jerk. With this feat, he matched the national record set by Maharashtra's Sanket Sargar in 2022. His remarkable performance ensured that Chhattisgarh continued to shine in the weightlifting event.
In a highly competitive contest, Maharashtra’s Mukund Aher secured the silver medal with a total lift of 247kg, while his teammate Srinivas Goud bagged the bronze with a total of 244kg.
Chhattisgarh’s Weightlifting Dominance
Vijay Kumar was not the only weightlifter from Chhattisgarh to make headlines. Gyaneshwari Yadav clinched gold in the women's 49kg category with a total lift of 191kg (85kg snatch + 106kg clean and jerk). Maharashtra’s Sarika Shingare and Haryana’s Komal Kohar both lifted 179kg but had to settle for silver and bronze, respectively.
An Inspiring Journey of Dedication and Hardship
Vijay Kumar’s journey to the top was far from easy. Born into a modest family, financial constraints made his weightlifting aspirations difficult. Unlike many elite athletes, Kumar did not have access to sports supplements or specialized training. His diet was simple, yet his dedication was unmatched.
“My parents didn’t see a future in weightlifting,” Kumar revealed after his victory. “They wanted me to quit, but I couldn’t. This was my passion, my only choice. Today’s gold is proof I was right to keep going.”
Overcoming Injuries and Self-Doubt
Kumar's career was marred by hamstring injuries that nearly ended his journey in weightlifting. The constant pain and setbacks often made him question whether he would ever return to competitive lifting.
“I never thought I would win a gold medal. But here I am, standing at the top,” he said with a proud smile.
Dedication to Supporters
Vijay Kumar dedicated his gold medal to his parents and coach, who stood by him through thick and thin. “This medal is for them. They believed in me when no one else did.”
The Road Ahead for Vijay Kumar
With this remarkable achievement, Vijay Kumar has firmly positioned himself as a future star in Indian weightlifting. As he continues to break barriers, the nation eagerly anticipates his next move, possibly on the international stage.
