BWF to Test New 3x15 Scoring System in Selected Competitions from April

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has announced that it will trial a new 3x15 scoring system in selected competitions for at least six months, beginning in April 2025. This initiative aims to make matches shorter, more engaging, and appealing to a broader audience.

Current vs. New Scoring System

  • New System: 15-point, best-of-three games (3x15), with setting to 21

Implementation of the 3x15 Format

The BWF Council, during its November 2024 meeting in Kuala Lumpur, approved this experimental shift. The test will be conducted across various levels of tournaments, including:

  • Continental Championships

  • Grade 3 Tournaments (International Challenge, International Series, and Future Series)

  • National and International Leagues

  • National Tournaments

Why the Change?

The BWF believes that the 3x15 system enhances excitement and efficiency for both players and spectators. Key reasons include:

  1. More Exciting Points: Fewer points per game increase the probability that each rally will be thrilling.

  2. Faster Game Progression: Matches will reach crucial moments sooner, heightening suspense.

Following this assessment, the BWF Council will determine whether to propose a permanent adoption of the 3x15 system at the BWF Annual General Meeting (AGM) in April 2026.

Evolution of Badminton’s Scoring System

Badminton has seen multiple changes in its scoring format over the years:

  • Original System: 15x3 (Men’s & Doubles) and 11x3 (Women’s) with only the server scoring points.

  • 2002: A short-lived 7x5 system.

  • 2006: Introduction of the current rally point system (3x21).

  • 2014: Experimentation with the 11x5 format.

  • 2021: A proposal for 11x5 was revisited but failed to secure enough votes at the 82nd BWF AGM.
