Balaji-Bollipalli Pair Wins, Karan Impresses on Debut

India secured their place in the Davis Cup World Group I with a dominant straight-set victory, as N Sriram Balaji and Rithvik Choudary Bollipalli delivered an emphatic performance to hand the hosts an unassailable 3-0 lead against Togo in the play-off tie at the DLTA Complex on Sunday. Youngster Karan Singh also impressed on his Davis Cup debut, extending India’s lead to 4-0.

Decisive Win Seals India’s Advancement

Holding a comfortable 2-0 lead before the start of the day's matches, India needed just one more win to seal the tie. Balaji and Bollipalli rose to the occasion in the very first contest, defeating M’lapa Tingou Akomolo and Hod’abalo Isak Padio 6-2, 6-1 in just 57 minutes.

The Togolese team suffered a setback when their best player, Thomas Setodji, was sidelined due to an arm injury. His absence proved costly as Akomolo struggled significantly, failing to hold serve even once throughout the match.

Balaji’s Powerful Serving Dominates Match

Balaji put on a commanding display with his serves, conceding only one point on his serve throughout the match. The duo’s synergy was evident, building on their Challenger title win last year, and keeping the pressure firmly on their opponents.

Although Bollipalli faced a minor hiccup in his debut service game, where he found himself at 30-all due to a half-volley miss, he quickly settled into rhythm, ensuring the match remained one-sided.

Early Breaks Set the Tone

India made their first breakthrough in the third game when Akomolo served. Bollipalli executed an exquisite forehand return, landing deep within the court, followed by a service return winner from Balaji, securing two break points. A thrilling volley rally on the first break point ended with Akomolo hitting long, giving India a 3-1 lead. Balaji then held serve comfortably, extending the advantage to 4-1.

Bollipalli, now fully composed, served with greater precision. Togo’s problems deepened when Akomolo double-faulted twice at 15-15 while serving to stay in the set, handing India two set points. While Togo managed to save the first, Bollipalli capitalized on the second with a clinical overhead volley winner.

Second Set: India’s Dominance Continues

The Indian duo carried their momentum into the second set, breaking early and shutting down any hopes of a Togo comeback. Akomolo’s struggles persisted, and his second serve came under pressure at 30-all. A costly forehand miss handed India another breakpoint.

Balaji’s only lapse came in the fifth game, where he committed a double fault, but India was already firmly in control with a 4-1 lead. Padio, too, succumbed under pressure, losing his serve, allowing Bollipalli to serve out the match and secure India's place in World Group I.

Karan Singh Impresses on Debut

With the tie already sealed, India handed a debut to 21-year-old Karan Singh in the first reverse singles match. Under the watchful eyes of his coach, Aditya Sachdeva, Karan delivered an impressive performance, defeating Padio 6-2, 6-3.

Interestingly, Sasikumar Mukund sat in the captain’s chair instead of Rohit Rajpal for Karan’s match. Karan’s aggressive play, solid serves, and effective drop shots overwhelmed his opponent. Padio, who plays in the US Collegiate circuit, displayed good ball striking, but Karan's superior control ultimately made the difference.

Karan, who previously trained at the now-shut National Tennis Centre (NTC) at DLTA, remained composed throughout his debut appearance, showing no signs of nerves. His only flaw was dropping serve in the fifth game of the second set.

Looking Ahead

Both teams mutually decided not to play the dead fifth rubber. India's commanding 4-0 victory in the Davis Cup play-offs marks another step forward for the nation’s tennis aspirations. With Balaji and Bollipalli showcasing their exceptional chemistry and skill, and Karan Singh demonstrating promise on debut, the team will be eager to build on this success as they prepare for tougher challenges ahead in World Group I.
