The National Games in Dehradun witnessed an electrifying contest in the men's 102kg weightlifting category. Maharashtra’s Vaishnav Thakur made history by breaking the snatch national record, but it was Services’ Jagdish Vishwakarma who claimed gold with a dramatic clean-and-jerk performance, standing on just one leg after completing his lift.
Vaishnav Thakur’s Record-Breaking Snatch Lift
Vaishnav Thakur stunned the weightlifting community by lifting 160kg in the snatch segment, surpassing the previous national record of 157kg held by Jagdish Vishwakarma. His impeccable form and strength demonstrated his potential as one of India’s emerging weightlifting stars.
However, despite his remarkable snatch performance, Vaishnav struggled in the clean-and-jerk round, lifting only 175kg. This resulted in a total lift of 335kg, earning him the silver medal.
Jagdish Vishwakarma’s Golden Performance: A Display of Grit
Jagdish Vishwakarma, the previous record holder, showcased resilience and power as he lifted 152kg in snatch and an astonishing 193kg in clean and jerk. His total lift of 345kg secured him the gold medal.
What made his victory even more extraordinary was his ability to maintain composure despite standing on one leg after his final clean-and-jerk attempt. Unlike his previous competition mishap, where his lift was ruled invalid, this time he ensured the lift was complete before lifting his leg, securing a legitimate ‘good lift.’
